During his concert tour of China and Japan between 23rd November and 8th December 2018, maestro Pogorelich performed his current recital program with pieces by Mozart, Liszt and Schumann.
As part of his regular annual tour of the countries of the Far East, between 23rd November and 8th December 2018, maestro Pogorelich performed at six concerts in China (Xi’an and Beijing), and Japan (Kagoshima, Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo). At those concerts Pogorelich played pieces from his current recital program – Adagio in B minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sonata in B minor by Franz Liszt, as well as Symphonic Etudes op. 13 by Robert Schumann. The inclusion of Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes in this year’s program took us back to 1978, when Pogorelich performed them for first time in public 40 years ago.
Pogorelich’s warm-hearted welcome in China began on 22nd November at the Xi’an Conservatory of Music where, on that occasion, a talk with the local students was also organised. A recital was held the following day in the Xi’an Concert Hall. Pogorelich performed his second concert in China in the National Centre for Performing Arts Music Hall in Beijing (25.11).
Maestro Pogorelich began his visit to Japan with a tour of the ancient Shinto shrine complex, Kirishima-Jingū, in the city of Kirishima in the Kagoshima Prefecture, where he performed on 1st December in the Kirishima Kokusai Ongaku Hall. This was followed by concerts in Osaka (The Symphony Hall, 2.12.) and Nagoya (Aichi Prefectural Arts Center, 6.12). Maestro Pogorelich held the final concert of this tour in the Suntory Hall in Tokyo (8.12.), where he met with the renowned Japanese writer, Haruki Murakami. Murakami, a great classical music aficionado, but also one of Pogorelich’s favourite writers, mentioned Pogorelich in one of his bestselling novels, After Dark, from 2004.
Maestro Pogorelich’s next tour in Japan has been scheduled for February 2020.
